With a land mass of nearly 6 million acres, Denali National Park and Preserve is the size of Massachusetts.  "Denali" is Koyukon Athabaskan for "the high one," the name given by the indiginous people to what white settles named Mount McKinley.  At 20,030 feet above sea Denali is the highest peak in North America.

Located on the southern end of the Kenai Penisula, Homer offers breathtaking views across Kachemak Bay.  Homer is home to the Pratt Gallery, a lovely museum of culture and art, and many art galleries.  It is also home to "The Spit," a spit of land that juts 5 miles out into the bay.  The Spit attracts fishermen and tourists.  It also attracts Bald Eagles.

The Hollyhock Lane Parade is a tradition in the Indian Hills neighborhood of Grand Rapids, Michigan. With a neighborhood and kids riding bicycles decorated with red, white and blue streamers, the parade is quintessential small town America. At the end of the program, participants and viewers listen to remarks by a community leader to mark the day. Here, in less than 2 minutes, is the 2011 Hollyhock Lane Parade.

I enjoy listening to college commencement addresses.  A lot of them -- perhaps most of them -- are just a a string of cliches.  But occasionally I come across a real gem.  I had the pleasure of hearing Anna Quindlen at the Kenyon College graduation of 2008.  She was wonderful  This year she gave the commencement address at Grinnell College.(Transcript.) It is well worth a listen.

Sun, 29 May 2011 07:22:51 -0700 Grand Rapids Responds to Newsweek with a Lipdub http://rdmegr.com/grand-rapids-responds-to-newsweek-with-a-lipd-97235 http://rdmegr.com/grand-rapids-responds-to-newsweek-with-a-lipd-97235 In January 2011, Newsweek Magazine (a magazine struggling to survive) published a list of dying cities in the United States. Included at number 10 was the city in which I live, Grand Rapids, Michigan. For those of us who have watched the growth of a vibrant downtown over the past 15 years, the Newsweek article seemed more than a bit unfair. The Mayor responded by sending Newsweek a good natured letter, even inviting the editors to join him at a Lady Gaga concert when she was touring through town. http://ow.ly/55oXW They did not acccept.

Earlier this week, Grand Rapids published a video response - The Grand Rapids Lipdub. The brainchild of 22-year old Rob Bliss, the Lipdub is a 9-minute video shot in one continuous take in which area celebrities, business people, and public officials, joined by anyone who wanted to participate, lip sync "American Pie" through the streets of downtown.

Newsweek responded on Facebook, saying it loved the lipdub and were "big fans>" Then they proceeded to point the finger for the 10 ten list on a third-party site with which it shares content but which "our current editorial team doesn't endorse and wouldn't have employed. It certainly doesn't reflect our view of Grand Rapids." http://bit.ly/ja9NPW

Hmmmm?

The Blizzard of 2011 struck west Michigan last evening. Snowfall amounts ranged from 9 to 16 inches, with about 12 to 15 in Grand Rapids. Here is a timelapse video of the storm in 18 seconds. I began taking photos around 6:30 pm on February 1 and took one every hour through the night, except during the 2 and 3 o'clock hours, which were the height of the storm.  They happen also to be the height of my sleep cycle.
