Early this morning, I made a quick visit to Pickerel Lake in Cannonsburg, Michigan. I got there just as the gate was opening at 7:00 a.m. Sunrise was not until 7:57, so I spent a little time scouting some shots. The first things that caught my eye were ferns that had turned from their deep green to orange and yellow. When I took this photo, I had in mind that I would process it in black and white to highlight the texture in the leaves and take advantage of the contrast between the color of the ferns and the foliage in the background.

As the sun rose and began to crest the horizon, light began to spread across the scene highlighting these trees growing in the shallows of the lake.

Rising higher in the morning sky, the sun revealed the autumn colors, which had not yet reached their peak.

I left before the sun burned off the morning fog, but not before taking this photo of a wider scene.
